Children sledge hockey team established in Saratov

The official inauguration of the sledge hockey team Kryliya (Wings) was celebrated in Saratov on September 23. This is the ninth team on the map of the League. Snegiri (Snowbirds), a team from Moscow, and Avrora (Aurora), a team from St. Petersburg, came for a visit in order to provide support and encouragement to the newcomers. Among those present during the official ceremony were Aleksandr Abrosimov, the Saratov Region minister of youth policy and sports; Aleksandr Nizovtsev, chairman of the Saratov chapter of the Russian Society of the Disabled, member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation; Sergei Ulegin, two-time world champion in kayak and canoe rowing; and Sergei Rodionov, director of the ice sports center Kryliya, an autonomous non-profit organization.

“The aim of today’s event is to show the residents of the Saratov Region which new options for sports activities are now available to physically challenged kids. Here in Saratov there exists infrastructure for kids to work out in, there is an ice sport facility in Balakovo City plus we have been discussing an option of opening a similar department based in Kristall (Crystal), our ice hockey Olympic Reserve physical culture school”, said Aleksandr Abrosimov, the Saratov Region minister of youth policy and sports, during the official opening ceremony.

Honored guests performed symbolic face-off at the close of the ceremony, thus kicking off the exhibition game.
League newcomers took places in the grandstands of the stadium while no-nonsense competition flared up on ice. The Snegiri began their assault on the Auroras goal net being all over their adversary. Artyom Denisov, Moscow team captain, achieved a penta-trick, yet the St. Petersburg players did not allow the Muscovites to get away with that: they broke the goose egg, as the saying goes. The goalies mistake led to the penalty shootout, and Nikolai Filippov, Auroras rearguard, did not miss his chance to score! The game ended with the 5:1 score.
As Elena Niga, managing director of the NPO Childrens Sledge Hockey League, said, such road games will help kids to get more game practice as well as demonstrate in new regions and towns possibilities for kids with physical disabilities to practice ice hockey. Saratov residents have already received sledge packages and training apparel. This will be the first team to use hockey sticks Zaryad (Charge), a Russian make, she noted.

The Elena and Gennady Timchenko Foundation and NPO From the Pure Heart provided support for three new teams in 2018: in Novosibirsk Region, in Cheboksary and Saratov.
