15 January was the start of Good Ice, a competition to support children’s ice hockey promotion initiatives, organized by the Sports Studies Academy Not-for-Profit Association sponsored by the Charitable Foundation of Elena and Gennady Timchenko.
The competition is designed to promote children’s hockey in towns and rural areas, make sports available to disadvantaged or at-risk children, children from single-parent or large families and children with disabilities, as well as upskill the coaches.
“Sports are good for personal growth, social and physical skills, team and commitment building. This is vital to achieving success in life, which is particularly important for underprivileged or disadvantaged children. Sports level the social playing field and show how to succeed without regard to status, finances and origins,” said Igor Baradachov, head of the Sports programme at the Timchenko Foundation.
It is open to all registered Russian non-profits with hands-on experience in sports management, as well as local government agencies. The winners will be awarded funding up to 1,500,000 roubles.
Entries are solicited from St Petersburg, Leningrad Oblast, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Vologda Oblast, Kaliningrad Oblast, Murmansk Oblast, Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Novgorod Oblast, Pskov Oblast, Republic of Karelia, Komi Republic, Kirov Oblast, Nizhny-Novgorod Oblast, Perm Krai, Republic of Mordovia, Republic of Tatarstan, Udmurtian Republic, Chuvash Republic, Amur Oblast, Primorsky Krai, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Khabarovsk Krai, Irkutsk Oblast and Altai Republic. Subject to the approval of the competition organizers, invitations can be extended to organizations from elsewhere.

The competition entry period is between 15 January and 31 March. Results will be published 30 April on the websites of the Good Ice programme and the Charitable Foundation of Elena and Gennady Timchenko.
